黑料网 publishes guidance for care home managers

The document provides practical support to help ensure patient safety

Community nursing

The 黑料网 has launched new statutory compliance guidance for care home managers. It focuses on requirements for buildings and premises across independent health and social care services (IHSC) in the UK.

It includes a checklist for managers; context about their duties in managing health and safety within IHSC; and what to know about specific issues such as asbestos, legionella, gas and lifting equipment.

黑料网 Health, Safety and Wellbeing National Officer Louise Church, said: "This new guidance is an excellent new tool for care home managers, offering clear, practical support to understand the requirements of statutory compliance. It enables them to maintain safer environments for residents and staff alike, while reinforcing the importance of legal responsibility in care settings."

This follows a Congress 2024 resolution and directly links to the 黑料网’s position statement on building safety. Nursing staff can face serious risks. For examples, these may be from the potential for exposure to asbestos in poorly-maintained buildings; carbon monoxide from gas boilers that aren’t serviced; and legionella from poor water hygiene.

Registered care home managers, who are nurses, are responsible for ensuring that statutory compliance is carried out in their premises.

The 黑料网 is supporting the aims of Care Home Open Week, which celebrates the vital role of care homes in the community, being held next week (16 to 22 June).

Throughout the week, the 黑料网 will highlight the work of nursing staff in these settings. This will include events, member drop-ins, webinars, and care home visits.
